Buy Nothing Day

Sponsored by Adbusters

http://www.adbusters.org/campaigns/bnd/

"United We Spend?" United Let's Don't.

If enough jammers turn their disaffection into resistance for just one day, November 29 could mark the delivery of a landmark social message. More than a million people will celebrate 11 years of opposition on the unofficial "opening day" of the Christmas frenzy. Play this one right and we will make Buy Nothing Day 2002 a global event on par with Earth Day.

The Gift of Giving Benefit Concert

"Environmental Troubadour" Dale Crider to Perform

Dale Crider will be among the widely known musicians performing in “The Gift of Giving Concert” at the Monticello Opera House. His career as a folk musician and educator is well known by way of his straight forward lyrics blended into bluegrass, folk and gospel rhythms, a unique form of “edu-tainment” on Florida’s environment. Crider lives in a swampy salt marsh, in Paines Prairie (Alachua County), in a self-built cypress and pine stilt home. Both his home and lifestyle are among the ways he actually lives the eco-wise approaches he has taught for so many years.

The event is a benefit for the Florida Public Interest Foundation. Tickets are available at Chez Pierre,Beethoven & Company and through the Foundation Web site at http://www.forthepbulic.net/ as well as through the Opera House. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door. Doors open at 7:00 PM for a Silent Auction, with a Dance Exhibition scheduled for 7:30 PM and the Concert to begin at 8:00 PM. Pam Laws, Del Suggs and others will also perform as part of this one-of-a-kind program.

Art, Nature and the Environment

Mark Messersmith

Unitarian Church

2810 N. Meridian Road

Mark Messersmith is an artist with a vision -- an environmental vision.  Reviewers of his work seem confounded by the richness of his images but they agree that his work is a voice for the wonder of Nature and a rebuke of civilization's incessant tearing at its fabric.

Carol Leake, who works in the world of art writes:  "The leading characters in his paintings are the indigenous fauna of his adopted state of Florida -- herons, bobcats, alligators, snakes, . . .";  and "The theme of environmental violation is evident throughout his work, the immediacy of his bravura brushwork reinforcing the urgency of his thematic material."

Mark, accompanied by one or two his paintings, will talk to us about this unique fusion of environmental awareness and artistic sensibility.
